Residents press floodplain review; county relays sheriff's guidance that no reimbursement is paid for federal detainees

During the public-comment portion of the July 1 meeting, resident Amy Siple told commissioners that properties within FEMA-designated Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHAs) "have not flooded with all the rain that has been received recently" and urged the use of sources beyond aerial imagery when evaluating floodplain regulations and permit decisions. Siple also reported that a citizen petition in Halstead gathered enough signatures to place a battery energy storage system (BESS) question on the general-election ballot.
Kathy Anderson of Newton asked whether the county receives reimbursement for time federal (ICE) inmates spend in the county detention center. Shannon Kingsley relayed an answer from Sheriff Chad Gay: local charges are addressed first and, within 48 hours of those charges being closed, inmates are transferred to ICE custody; "The County will not be reimbursed for time spent at the Detention Center," Kingsley said.
