Harvey County closes 1913 bridge K-8.6 after structural concerns; repairs underway

Harvey County temporarily closed a bridge identified as K-8.6 on NW 12th Street after crews found inadequate openings in structural components and erosion at the bridge approach following recent storms. Road & Bridge Superintendent Jim Meier said the bridge, built in 1913, will remain closed until engineers can reassess its condition.
Meier detailed emergency repairs including placement of rip-rap and hauling more than 96 cubic yards of material to fill erosion; he told commissioners he has applied for funding for replacement or rehabilitation several times in the past without success. "The bridge is from 1913 and had inadequate openings of structural components," Meier said. He said the county will seek an engineer's assessment to determine next steps.
