EAC reports Callery pear removal a success, plans 'Free a Tree' program and summer subcommittee

The Environmental Advisory Council said the township’s recent Callery pear removal project "was a success," and members recommended next steps including new walking-trail paths and forming a summer subcommittee to develop procedures and an emergency response plan. Zbigniew Bieniaszewski and Township Assistant Manager David Mrochko confirmed the project outcome and emphasized resident signage helped community understanding.
Chair Susan Royer reported training from Pennypack Ecological Restoration for the proposed Free a Tree program; four EAC members, two Shade Tree Commission members and one Parks & Open Space member attended. Royer said the EAC recommends running the planting program "from October through April so as not to disturb nesting birds" and that staff and the subcommittee will survey candidate planting areas over the summer. The group also noted that going forward herbicide applicators working on invasive removals should be certified and follow cutting crews.
