District dashboards: Piedmont tops county in ELA and math; chronic absenteeism improves

Stephanie Griffin, the district's director of instructional technology, reviewed the California School Dashboard results published in November and explained how the state combines status and change-over-time to generate color-coded indicators. Griffins' key takeaway: Piedmont is among the county leaders in English language arts and math, with strong distance-from-standard metrics, and the district showed meaningful improvements in chronic absenteeism and graduation rates.
Griffin walked trustees through each indicator (ELA, math, science, English-learner progress, chronic absenteeism, suspension, graduation rate, and college/career readiness) and explained equity-group reporting thresholds (districts must have at least 30 students in a subgroup for the state to report results for that group). On chronic absenteeism Griffin noted the district's overall K–8 rate is low (Beach School at 2.7%) but that a small increase in a tiny subgroup can change that group's color rating; she described interventions such as transit passes and targeted outreach for families facing attendance barriers.
"Headline: we are not one of those" districts the state flagged for additional oversight, Griffin said, noting Piedmont's overall strong results. Trustees followed up on how local interventions and data drills are used to target supports for groups showing declines.
