Trustees reviewed two policy items in first-reading form Wednesday: a substantially revised Academic Honesty policy and a new position statement on AI and emerging technology.
Dr. Hahn said the academic-honesty revision updates language that dated from 2000 and explicitly addresses artificial intelligence and how it may interact with assessments and the student behavior matrix. "Academic integrity includes the use of AI in this policy," Dr. Hahn said. Staff said the draft draws on CSBA language and district technology‑committee input and will be refined through department meetings so syllabi align with school- and grade-level norms.
On a companion policy, staff presented a new district position statement intended to guide staff and student use of AI tools, embed equity and safety considerations, and link to existing prohibited‑use and bullying policies for harms such as deep fakes. Trustees raised questions about how to make AI‑use transparency practical — for example, whether teachers should flag AI‑generated feedback — and staff agreed to return with clearer procedures and an approved‑tool list maintained outside the board policy. Both items are on track for second readings with the incoming board in January.
