Police report 288 calls in two weeks; fire department reports successful mock-bus training

Mayor Jim Kreemer briefed the council that the Long Prairie Police Department handled 288 calls between Aug. 13 and Aug. 27—an average of 19.20 calls per day—with 151 traffic-related incidents, 73 assists, and smaller counts in categories such as suspicious activity, theft, and domestic disturbances. He also noted new part-time officers Boe and Eric have started and that another part-time hire, Daniel, is completing training with the Staples Police Department before joining LPPD.
Fire Chief Dan Laumeyer reported a mock-bus training exercise Aug. 20 involving more than 40 firefighters, more than 50 personnel from the state patrol and the bus company, and 21 child volunteers acting as victims; Laumeyer said the training "was a success." The fire department's volunteers included firefighters from Hewitt, Bertha, Eagle Bend, Browerville and Long Prairie; the departments will also conduct annual firefighter physicals next week.
