Bristow council adopts resolution to fly Muscogee Creek Nation flag at City Hall

On Dec. 1, 2025, the Bristow City Council voted to adopt a resolution allowing the Muscogee Creek Nation flag to fly at City Hall.

Mayor Kris Wyatt described the proposed placement and funding, saying, "If the flags are flown on one pole they will be flown in the order of the United Stated Flag, the Oklahoma Flag, the Municipality Flag and the Nations Flag." She added she would not ask the Nation to pay for a pole and that donations would cover the cost.

Council debate centered on whether permitting one tribal flag would invite other requests, and whether the city needs a written policy. Councilmember Judd Johns said he had contacted constituents who opposed the proposal, asking whether allowing the flag would open the door to others. Councilmember Jeff Roberts said he favored a clear written policy but was not opposed to the flag itself. City Attorney Beth Anne Childs said she was aware of other municipalities flying tribal flags and cited the McGirt ruling when noting tribal boundaries are relevant to the question. When Councilmember Joe Church asked whether a Christian flag could be flown, Childs replied that would violate the Establishment Clause.

A motion by Joe Church to take no action on agenda item #7 (the Muscogee Creek Nation flag) failed on roll call. Later, a motion by Jeff Roberts, seconded by Frank Groom, to adopt the resolution passed by roll call vote. The council recorded the adoption as Resolution #R1463-120125. The resolution text and any implementing policy were not detailed in the meeting minutes.

The council did not set a separate effective date in the minutes; the resolution was recorded as adopted during the Dec. 1 meeting.
