Board approves surplus declaration for older Chromebooks

The Piedmont Unified School District board approved a resolution declaring older instructional Chromebooks surplus and opened the process for auction, recycling, or disposal.
Stephanie Griffin, the district's director of technology, explained many Chromebooks are 2018 models that have been passed through grade levels and are at the end of their useful life. "We cull what we can of screens and parts... recycling groups will buy them for the parts too," Griffin said, adding that some recyclers pay about $5 per Chromebook. The district will offer devices through the required surplus process; devices not sold will be handled through recyclers and resellers in accordance with district protocols.
Board members asked about parts reuse and donations; staff said salvageable components are recycled for repair and unusable units are sold to recyclers or disposed of. The motion to adopt the surplus declaration carried 5–0.
