Council approves day camp use of Public Works building after safety and liability discussion

Camp Director Vicki Groom told the council that Bristow Day Camp has used the former Bristow Armory Building (now the Public Works building) for roughly 44 years and serves “about 300 + kids” and about 52 teen staff each summer. Groom warned the council that “if we can't have day camp in this building, we will not have day camp,” and said the VFW option was not usable because of its condition.
Councilmembers pressed for safety steps, including limiting access to parts of the building, arranging check-in outside at the amphitheater, and reviewing background checks and release forms. City Inspector Chad Foster said he would review safety procedures and the buildings; Attorney Beth Anne Childs cautioned that a parent release “isn't going to keep them from suing.” The council approved the requested use, and staff were asked to identify and implement reasonable safety controls for the 12 days of building use.
