Council amends bicycle and pedestrian master plan to add greenways and spot improvements

La Crosse city staff presented and the council approved amendments to the 2024 Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan to reflect Board of Public Works decisions and recent public input. The proposed changes include five network adjustments largely focused on greenways (Vine Street, Badger Street, Redfield Street, 10th Street extension and a Goose Green Trail addition) and three spot improvements with upgraded crossings and rapid flashing beacons at locations such as West Avenue and Vine and Farnam and Redfield. "The bicycle and pedestrian advisory committee approved this resolution at their July meeting," staff said and recommended council approval.
Council members asked whether truck traffic and turning-movement data informed the proposed routes. Staff responded that truck movements are considered in detailed street design and that the amendments are a broad network-level change that will be coordinated with Wisconsin DOT work on corridor studies. Director Gallagher moved approval; Council Member Stein seconded and the council voted aye to adopt the amendments.
