Public-safety director outlines back-to-school outreach and enforcement plans

Director of Public Safety Rita Rees briefed the council on back-to-school safety efforts coordinated with the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District, ABC School District, Little Lake and private schools. Staff contacted a total of 32 schools, conducted officer visits with quadrant officers and motor deputies, and delivered OTS-funded signage and lawn signs to help parents and students navigate drop-off and pick-up safely.
Rees said the objective is both enforcement and education: "Our objective again is to have a safe and secure return to school," she said, adding that residents and parents can schedule safety presentations or report concerns to the Public Safety Department. Staff also previewed a short safety video shown to the council that included local officers and a principal thanking the department for outreach.
