Board pledges supervisors' discretionary funds to cover 4‑H camp scholarship shortfall

Bailey Robertson, a 4‑H agent for Smith County, told the board the county 4‑H camp—running since 1954—teaches life skills and currently has about 190 registrants and 51 scholarship applications.
"I'm a 4 h agent for Smith County here, and 4 h has been a camp has been a staple program for us, since 1954," Robertson said, asking the supervisors for support ahead of the May 22 registration deadline. Ryan Haynes, vice president of the 4‑H teen club, described the program's impact on youth and urged support.
Supervisors discussed funding options and several members offered to contribute from discretionary funds. Supervisor (speaker 5) moved that the identified shortfall be covered equally from each supervisor's discretionary fund; the motion was seconded and approved unanimously.
The board made the pledge on the spot and staff said a check would be issued to close the gap before camp begins.
