Story County extends moratorium on crypto mining and data centers through March 2027

The Story County Board of Supervisors on March 17 unanimously approved Resolution #26‑69, extending a temporary moratorium on applications and permits for digital asset mining, cryptocurrency operations and data processing centers in unincorporated Story County through March 31, 2027.
Leanne Harter, Director of Planning and Development, told the board staff will work with legal counsel to draft regulations addressing digital asset mining and related uses. The board’s action puts a pause on new permitting while those rules are developed. "The board directed staff to extend the moratorium while it works with legal counsel on regulations," Harter said.
Several residents spoke at the hearing urging the extension or a permanent ban. Mike Meetz of Milford Township said he "supports the moratorium." Other commenters, including Joli Vollers (Milford Township) and Brenda Brink (Huxley), urged a ban on data centers or extension to include battery storage. Bob Brant (Franklin Township), participating by Zoom, also supported the moratorium. The board approved the resolution on a roll-call vote. The moratorium is set to expire on or before March 31, 2027 unless further action is taken.
