City extends public comment on wildfire plan through Aug. 9; council reminded of fire‑restriction authority

City Manager Dana told the council the Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) is out for public review and the comment period was extended through Aug. 9 to give residents more time to review the long document. Dana also reminded councilors that the fire chief has authority to enact fire restrictions as conditions change; an ordinance to formalize restrictions will be brought forward at the next regularly scheduled meeting if the chief issues an order.
Council members flagged recent regional fire activity — including large losses in Spokane — and several asked staff to be proactive on restrictions and public messaging. A councilor also asked staff to clarify language in Ordinance 17‑25 (the fire‑restrictions ordinance) to ensure the chief's authority to both enact and rescind restrictions is explicit; staff said they can return with clarifying language after budget work.
