Oak Park leaders urge support for public‑safety millage after early‑morning shooting that killed two

City Manager Eric Tungate told the council that Oak Park Public Safety responded to multiple reports of gunfire at about 4:48 a.m. near Coolidge Highway south of 9 Mile Road and that "a senseless act of violence claimed the lives of 2 young people, an 18 year old woman and a 19 year old man." He said two others were taken to a local hospital and remained in stable condition and that the investigation is active.

Tungate urged residents to come forward with information and noted the city had held five open houses to explain two public‑safety millage renewals on the ballot the next day; he said he could not tell residents how to vote but that the measures were "absolutely critical for us to continue to maintain the great public safety services that our residents have come to expect." Director Cooper described the collision that totaled a marked public‑safety vehicle and said the person who struck the officer was intoxicated and arrested. The council offered condolences to victims' families and repeatedly thanked public‑safety personnel for their response. Tungate said the investigation remains active and that the city would work with partner jurisdictions and prosecutors "to ensure that anyone involved is held fully accountable under the law."
