Maple Grove Middle AVID students cite higher GPAs, stronger ACT results in board showcase

Maple Grove Middle School AVID coordinator Julia Fromm presented both qualitative and quantitative material to the school board, saying the first AVID cohort to reach senior year (class of 2024) shows measurable academic differences compared with a control group.
"On the screen, you can see the students that came through MGMS and then, compared to their counterparts, weighted GPA and unweighted GPA, they're significantly higher," Fromm said. She also reported differences in ACT scores for students who identify as BIPOC and highlighted that more than 85% of AVID eighth graders choose at least one advanced-placement course in ninth grade in recent cohorts.
Fromm cautioned that capacity is constrained by full‑time‑equivalent (FTE) funding: "There's a waiting list currently about of about 40 kids," she said, and the school must lottery spots to keep selections equitable. Board members and staff acknowledged program impact while noting expansion would require additional staffing and funding.
