Students, staff spotlight AVID program’s schoolwide reach in Osseo

Edinbrook Elementary and Maple Grove Middle School showcased AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) at the Oct. 21 Osseo Public School District board meeting, where students and staff described gains in organization, confidence and academic readiness and staff noted capacity limits that have produced a waiting list.
At the Oct. 21 board meeting, assistant superintendent Dr. Brian Bass introduced an AVID showcase featuring staff and students from Edinbrook Elementary and Maple Grove Middle School, who argued the program supports organization, goal-setting and belonging across grades.
"AVID has had a very positive impact on my life at Edinbrook," fifth-grader Isabella Quinn told the board, adding that color-coded materials and graphic organizers helped her express ideas more clearly. Edinbrook principal Krueger described AVID Elementary as a schoolwide approach integrated into daily instruction and said the site is pursuing demonstration status and will be a Midwest showcase site next spring.
Maple Grove Middle School AVID coordinator Julia Fromm said the secondary AVID launch and elective courses create a culture of literacy and shared high expectations. Fromm said the school has "a waiting list currently of about 40 kids" because full-time-equivalent funding limits the number of elective sections. Board members and staff emphasized equity in allocating those spots, noting the use of lotteries to ensure fair access.
The presentation included qualitative parent feedback and internal comparisons suggesting AVID students at Maple Grove post higher weighted and unweighted GPAs and stronger ACT results for some cohorts. Board members praised the student speakers and discussed options for expanding the program, while noting funding and staffing constraints.
