Emergency management staff presented proposed burn restrictions and told commissioners that surrounding counties were imposing bans; county fire chiefs recommended not a full ban but a restriction on controlled garbage pits when fire indices are low or moderate. The proposal would continue to allow barrels and would not restrict agricultural burning.
After minor wording edits suggested by counsel, the commission moved, seconded and approved the burn restrictions by voice vote. Emergency management said the restrictions respond to dry conditions expected to last into October and to a series of small fires the county has been managing.
The county will finalize the order and distribute it to local stakeholders and fire departments.
