Secretary Vic Teney told the Beaufort County Board of Education he used an AI tool to analyze the board's motions archive and the governance manual and to produce a condensed review of recommendations.
"I did use AI," Teney said while presenting a 26‑page review focused on 12 governance policies and five board–superintendent relationship policies (17 policies total). He described the work as a 'clean audit' that compared nearly 300–400 archived motions to written policy and flagged places where motions should be added, clarified or codified.
Teney listed recommendations ranging from clarifying the distinction between individual board requests and formal board direction to creating a formal amendment and revision log in the governance manual. He said monitoring report formats should be standardized and recommended codifying committee creation, membership and reporting requirements.
Board members raised process and timing concerns, with several urging more time for full review by members who were not present in person. Teney said the policy committee is needed to handle the volume of recommended changes and to draft specific policy language the full board can vote on at a subsequent meeting.
