Director of Business & Operations warns of likely deficit spending for 2025–26

Paul Southerton, Director of Business & Operations, told the Centennial School District 28J Governing Board on Dec. 11 that the district's 2023–24 fiscal-year results show the district is in a stronger position than in prior years but faces an uncertain funding outlook for 2025–26.
Southerton said state funding remains insufficient and warned that continuing current services will require deficit spending. He outlined next steps in the budget calendar: a January 2025 work session to establish priorities; an April 2025 first budget meeting; a May 2025 second budget meeting with public comment; and final budget adoption and appropriation in June 2025.
Board members asked questions about state funding, enrollment trends and calculations for maintaining current service levels. Southerton emphasized the unsustainability of repeated deficit spending and flagged possible roll-up costs and additional considerations that the board will examine in the upcoming budget meetings.
