Dr. Kelly Whitley, BHHS Principal, and elementary teacher Melanie McVay presented the proposed social studies curriculum adoption. They said the district worked across grade levels to identify options aligned with Oregon social sciences standards, emphasizing civics, economics, geography, history and inquiry-based learning.
Staff recommended McGraw Hill Social Studies at the elementary level (noted alignment with Oregon standards, digital and print access, and literacy integration) and National Geographic/Cengage for grades 6-12 (project-based learning and geographic perspective). The board discussed providing public access to sample materials at the district office prior to any adoption vote.
