Parents urge earlier site decision for proposed Mandarin immersion school

Organizers of the proposed Mandarin immersion school told the board they appreciate the district’s commitment to opening a program but urged staff to accelerate site selection so families could make informed enrollment choices. Abby Chow, representing Friends of the SF Mandarin School, said a spring 2027 site decision would come after families must participate in an October lottery and would leave many applicants uncertain about location and commute.
"If you have a short list of schools, please share it, engage the community in the early fall, and then announce that temporary site before the holidays at the latest," Abby Chow said. Staff later told the board they are prioritizing community engagement and are considering interim site arrangements for an initial, short‑term opening while continuing a full vetting process for a permanent location.
