Alejandra Saiz provided an overview of district staffing and selection standards: Richardson ISD has 48 certified librarians (36 elementary, six junior high, two middle school and four high school), and in Texas certified school librarians must have at least two years of teaching experience, a master's degree and completion of an approved preparation program and exam.
Saiz said, "All of our books must have at least 2 professional positive reviews," and explained that for nonfiction or titles without reviews staff consider publisher reputation, author reputation, professional association recommendations, curriculum alignment and collection balance when deciding whether a book is appropriate for school libraries.
