Richardson ISD forms School Library Advisory Council under SB13 to review materials

Alejandra Saiz, director of the district’s Library and Information Technology Department, opened the first meeting of the Richardson ISD School Library Advisory Council and explained the council’s legal basis and duties under state law. "SB13 establishes that the makeup of the committee needs to be at least 5 members with each member appointed by the board of trustees," Saiz said, describing who should serve and how voting membership is allocated.
Saiz told members the law requires the district to post proposed materials for 30 days before the board acts and that the board must adopt an acquisition policy incorporating SLAC recommendations. She said the board will receive SLAC’s recommendations in advance of the board meeting so trustees can review titles before voting. The district’s next SLAC meeting is scheduled for May 19; campus librarians will submit lists April 17 and members will receive the compiled lists May 4.
