Lakeland principal highlights playground upgrades, new staff and three‑year CIS grant

Angie Nichols, principal of Lakeland Elementary, told the Elk Rapids School Board on Sept. 8 that summer work left classrooms and staff bathrooms in good condition and that the building “looks fresh” for the new year.
Nichols said the school will add mini goal posts, new swings and a sandbox to the playground and thanked maintenance staff and volunteers for completing the work. She also introduced new staff members by name — Lucas DeForge (teacher), Kate Fries (teacher), Katelyn Jarvis (teacher), Melissa Bocardo (paraprofessional) and Kate Dentinger (preschool lead teacher) — and said Holly Schlicker will fill a three‑year Community In Schools grant role. The board received the update during the presentations portion of the meeting; no formal vote was required.
Nichols also noted curriculum changes: Lakeland will implement Version 3 of the Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) curriculum and focus on “touchpoints with neuroscience and proactive discipline strategies,” language Nichols used in her oral report to the board.
