Cascade High School principal Pete Rasmuson told the board the district will offer a new proficiency‑based senior credit called 'Next Steps' to meet a state higher‑education and career pathway requirement.
Rasmuson described the structure: students will complete tasks (service projects, resumes, mock interviews) across high school, be assessed on rubrics scored 1–4 with a 3 indicating proficiency, and earn the credit when tasks are complete. "We're gonna offer it, proficiency by credit or credit by proficiency," he said. The credit will be recorded as pass/no‑pass and will not affect GPA; seniors must have the credit assigned to walk at graduation. The counseling department will track progress and the school plans to use late‑start days and twilight sessions to give students time to complete activities.
