WEM board adopts several student and staff policies, rescinds 2014 social media policy

The Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Board approved multiple district policies and rescinded an older social media policy during its June 22 meeting.
The board voted to approve Policy 418 (Drug-Free Workplace/Drug-Free School), Policy 419 (Tobacco-Free Environment; possession and use of tobacco and vaping awareness/prevention instruction), Policy 420 (Students and Employees with Sexually Transmitted Infections and Diseases and Certain Other Communicable Diseases), and Policy 515 (Protection and Privacy of Pupil Records). Each policy was presented for approval with supporting attachments. Trustees voted in favor by roll call.
Board members also voted to rescind Policy 428, "Employee Use of Social Media," originally adopted in 2014, on the grounds that employee online conduct is covered under Policy 524 (Internet, Technology, and Cell Phone Acceptable Use and Safety Policy). The rescission passed by roll call vote.
The approvals and rescindment were recorded as motions with six members voting in favor. District staff indicated policy updates were coordinated through the Minnesota School Boards Association and the district policy review process.
