School board hears AVID update; approves principal's travel to national conference

AVID district and site leaders presented the program's two strands and classroom strategies to the North Wasco County School District 21 board on Nov. 21, highlighting supports for college and career readiness.
Nick Nelson (AVID District Coordinator), site coordinator Jim Taylor and teacher Gabe Judah described AVID's Elective class, use of the WICOR framework (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, Reading) and peer-tutorial model. A student from The Dalles Middle School, Payton, told the board she was "very grateful for the opportunity to participate in this program and is looking forward to continuing at the high school next year." The board agreed to have AVID staff return with additional detail about schoolwide strategies at a future meeting.
The board approved an out-of-state travel request for Principal Sherri Kilgore to attend the AVID National Conference (NATCON) scheduled Dec. 12–14, 2024. The motion to approve the travel was made by Director Jose Aparicio, seconded by Director John Nelson, and passed unanimously.
