Youth leagues warn fee hikes would force registration increases and program cuts

Deanna Livingston, president of Cape American Baseball (a nonprofit run largely by volunteers), said her league serves more than 400 families and that an "approximately 24,000" annual added expense would force difficult choices: raise registration fees, delay improvements, scale back community events, or serve fewer children. Coaches and volunteers described programs that offer free or low-cost opportunities (including programs for children with disabilities) and warned that steep, one-year fee increases would shift the burden to families and make grassroots sports less accessible.
Speakers asked the council to pursue alternatives such as incremental fee adjustments, vacancy savings and use of interest earnings. Council members acknowledged the role of volunteer organizations and asked staff to consider the nonprofit partnerships when vetting budget options.
