Earls said her mother was told her license had expired and was asked to leave; she said her mother offered to remain on leave without pay while resolving the licensing issue but soon learned the departure was being described to staff as "personal reasons."
"I'm here to speak on what I believe as the wrongful termination of recent 2nd, grade teacher, Jennifer Earls," Sydney Earls said, describing a sequence in which a district staff member checked licenses with other teachers but reportedly did not contact her mother. Earls told the board she believed religious discrimination factored into the decision, saying a parent had complained three weeks earlier about students being asked to pray and read from the Bible in class. Earls said her mother denies forcing religious practices on students and that she was not given access to investigation notes or the identity of the complaining parent during the process.
Before the public comment, the board read from district policy BDDH to remind attendees the board will not respond to complaints concerning individual district personnel during public comment. No board response to the allegations was recorded in the public-comment period.
