Board to survey community on student cell phone use; draft plan due Sept. 19

Board Chair Cynthia Wright opened a discussion of student cell phone use on Sept. 5; directors recommended surveys of staff, students and families, town halls and outreach at the Multicultural Fair (Sept. 28) and Rogue Valley Growers & Crafters Market. Staff will develop a draft survey plan to present at the Sept. 19 meeting.
Chair Cynthia Wright reopened a board discussion about student cell phone use at school during the Sept. 5 work session and invited input on next steps. Board directors proposed surveying staff, students and parents/guardians, hosting a town hall meeting, providing the survey at the Multicultural Fair on Sept. 28 and at the Rogue Valley Growers & Crafters Market, linking research to the district website, clarifying which electronic devices would be covered, and inviting secondary principals to report on current site procedures.
The Board directed staff to develop a draft plan for a survey to go out to staff, students and parents/guardians, to offer the survey at the Multicultural Fair and Rogue Valley Growers & Crafters Market, and to include behavioral and mental-health data and research on the district website. Superintendent Bret Champion said staff would present the draft plan at the Sept. 19 board meeting.
