Sean Smith, founder of the nonprofit Enphase Kids, told trustees his group works to increase sports access and described program practices that reduce cost barriers: “Talent is universal, but opportunity is not,” Smith said as he urged the board to support efforts that lower the cost of participation for families. He told trustees many students who want to play are priced out of school and community sports programs and asked for the board’s support to expand access.
Ewan Blackman, an educator and frequent public commenter, urged trustees to prioritize minimizing harm to teachers and cited recent deficit estimates in urging local advocacy with state lawmakers. He said June 2025 projections had shown $60,000,000 but that the district now faced a $54,000,000 deficit figure (public comment assertion); board and administration then outlined separate internal estimates during the formal budget presentation.
Board staff thanked both commenters. President Poteet and other trustees said the district would continue to rely on community partners while pushing the legislature in Austin for changes that would improve funding stability for public education across Texas.
