"We haven't received any health agent applications since February of this year," the director of public health said, adding that the department has posted the position and is discussing pay and perks with the town administrator and the union to make the role more attractive. Board members said the staffing gap is hampering routine services and enforcement.
Board members and staff discussed short‑term measures including using outside consultants and soil evaluators to keep core functions running while preserving funds for a permanent hire. The director cautioned that paying consultants from the Health Agent line item could deplete the budget in as little as 20 weeks, leaving no funding to recruit a permanent agent.
Members agreed to continue negotiations with the town administrator, refine a recruitment strategy, and to request clear guidance on funding options at an upcoming meeting.
