Pacific High expands Friday electives, adds tech support class

Pacific High School is running an expanded electives program on Fridays with 1.5-hour class blocks designed to give students hands-on skills and local career pathways. Principal Shane Brown said the offerings this year include Social Dance, Portrait Drawing, Drama, 3-D Printing, Culinary, Automotive and an IT/Tech Support elective taught by IT Director Jered Rush.
"Social Dance" is the most popular class, Shane Brown said, and the district is considering adding a second period for its most-enrolled electives. Board Chair Judy Miles praised the program's "grow your own" focus, noting it teaches skills students can carry into trade school or local jobs. Bob Brown encouraged the district to publicize the program to local news outlets to highlight the community benefit.
IT Director Jered Rush said the district completed a phone-system upgrade and is using the Technology elective to train student helpers. The board discussed potential future partnerships with local businesses and with the Confederation of Oregon School Administrators (COSA) for a presentation on how rural districts expand student opportunities.
