The board unanimously approved an out‑of‑district travel request on Jan. 23 that will allow Native American students from North Wasco to attend the American Indian & Alaska Native Youth Summit in Washington, D.C., April 27–May 2, 2025.
Jonathan Fost (Special Programs Director) and Azariah Ozias (Title VI Indian Education liaison) told the board the summit—hosted by the Close Up Foundation—focuses on civic engagement, leadership development and cultural advocacy and is designed specifically for Native youth. The program will select 12 students regionally via an essay process and is all‑inclusive (transportation, lodging, meals, academic materials and instruction) so students will not face financial barriers to participate. The motion to approve the travel passed unanimously (motion: Director John Nelson; second: Director Adrian Lopez).
