During public comment on July 15, City of Sandusky resident Terry Burton said he supports the Erie County Health Department but objected to the department's sponsorship of Matt Westerhold's Substack blog. "While I support the Health Department, I am very troubled the Health Department is sponsoring inappropriate content," Burton said, and indicated he intends to raise the issue with the Health Department Board.
Commission President Shenigo responded that the Erie County Health Department "operates under its own Board of Health and does not receive operational funding from the Board of Commissioners," noting the department is funded through voter-approved levies and federal grants as a Federally Qualified Health Center. Shenigo advised Burton to address the Health Department Board, which oversees department operations and decisions.
