Autism Resource Center teacher details sensory supports and community outings

Fitzy Roberts, who works with Seaside's Autism Resource Center, told the board that the center embeds sensory regulation into daily instruction and uses tangible tools and community outings to help students access learning.
"Without this embedded sensory support, they're not gonna be able to access learning," Roberts said, listing classroom features such as exercise bikes, hammock swings, beanbags and specialized chairs. He described biweekly field trips to places like the library, grocery store and local museums to build social routines and community navigation skills.
Roberts said the center focuses on pre-vocational skill building as well as individualized academics, showing materials used to scaffold algebraic thinking for middle-school students. He estimated roughly 37 students in the program, with about a dozen who were the focus of the examples he presented.
