Several residents used the council's public comment period on June 9 to press city leaders on immigration recognition and police conduct.
Resident Solomon Fenton‑Miller read a people’s proclamation recognizing World Refugee Day and Tara McGovern urged the council to adopt similar proclamations and partnerships, saying the city should "join in reaffirming its commitment to protecting human rights, advancing peaceful solutions to displacement, and ensuring all people may live in safety, freedom and dignity." McGovern noted other Iowa cities had read similar proclamations and called for Coralville to engage on the issue.
Iowa City resident Dan Kauble addressed the council about concerns with Detective Josh Van Brocklin, alleging hateful and unprofessional conduct on social media and urging accountability. Kauble told the council he had provided city leadership with evidence and asked how Police Chief Kyle Nicholson is holding Van Brocklin accountable; he argued that "Van Brocklin’s employment by the City of Coralville sends a clear message that the city condones such hateful conduct." The council did not announce a personnel action in open session; later in the meeting the council moved to an executive session under Section 21.5(i) of the Code of Iowa to evaluate the professional competency of an individual at that person's request.
