Public works director Tony Boyd told the committee that late-season rains produced significant vegetation growth, prompting continued roadside and lane trimming primarily for fire-fuel reduction. He said additional fuel-reduction work is planned on West Shore open space and Pagoda Lane and that trimming and thinning will likely require ongoing maintenance over the next several years.
"This is primarily for fire fuel reduction," Boyd said, describing tree work, handrail repairs and a small project to replace 19 valves to address manganese deposits in park irrigation lines. Boyd also reported the Artist View deck structural engineering design is complete and that an RFP has been assembled; the bid deadline was set for July 30 with staff anticipating a contractor selection and fall project completion.
On the capital side, Boyd said the community park restroom renovation and an irrigation well made it into the CIP for the fiscal year, along with smaller maintenance items: San Rafael Avenue pathway repairs and mulch replacement. He said an architect is being engaged and staff will share plans and concepts when available. Committee members asked simple improvements (purse hooks, baby changing stations) be considered in restroom designs.
