Santiam Elementary reports gains in ELA and math, pilots regular-attendance outreach

Alicia Hanson, principal at Santiam Elementary, reported to the board on assessment results, classroom scheduling changes and an attendance pilot designed to improve students’ regular attendance.
Hanson said preliminary OSAS results showed 3rd–5th grade increases of about 8% in math and 9% in ELA, while science declines are smaller than last year (a drop of 5% this year vs. 10% last year). To address science and writing gaps, Hanson proposed a flip model for 5th grade in which one teacher focuses on math and science and another focuses daily on ELA/writing, guaranteeing more consistent science time and more writing across curriculum.
On attendance, Hanson described a pilot in which the attendance team will meet weekly for 15 minutes beginning Sept. 10 and make personalized contacts (texts or quick phone calls) to three families per staff member each week to try to move students into the 90% attendance zone. She said the goal is to track families strategically and expand effective practices if the pilot raises attendance rates.
