SFEA president urges board to address larger class sizes and staff workload

Emily Rao, who introduced herself to the board as president of the Silver Falls Education Association, told trustees the association's monthly address is meant to give the board a clearer sense of licensed staff working conditions. "The purpose of our monthly board address is to ensure that the school board and by extension, the public understands the working conditions and experiences for our licensed staff," Rao said.
Rao listed several concrete pressures: late staff moves, new reading curricula, and several classes with high enrollments. "We've got 41 students currently in AP psych," she said, and described middle- and high-school English classes and other sections with unusually large rosters. Rao asked the board to "keep asking questions and looking at the whole picture," and to weigh the districtwide human impact of decisions in addition to averages and funding lines.
