Board approves out-of-state trip for three Silverton band students to Montana festival

The Silver Falls SD 4J Board approved an out-of-state trip request for three Silverton High School band students who qualified for a University of Montana music festival in Missoula, Nov. 14–16.
A staff presenter said the students—Selena Cortez, Will Smith and Darian Nelson—were selected from a field of more than 400 auditioning musicians and will rehearse and perform under composer John Mackey and University of Montana faculty. The presenter told the board the trip will not use general fund dollars; families will fundraise for estimated travel and hotel costs (roughly $1,000 for airfare and about $1,000 for lodging per student was cited as a planning estimate). "This is not using any general fund money," the presenter said.
Two chaperones will attend (the band teacher and a parent). The board moved, seconded and voted to approve the trip.
