The Silver Falls SD 4J Board unanimously approved a calendar amendment to add one two-hour early-release per month to provide consistent collaborative planning and training time for teachers.
Superintendent Kim framed the change as a targeted tool to support PLC work, curriculum training (including the district's new 95% core curriculum and DIBELS early-literacy supports) and administrators' ability to visit buildings. "It gives them dedicated time to help facilitate meetings and trainings and attend IEP meetings and all kinds of other things," Kim said.
Board members debated the tradeoffs. Some members expressed concern that the change reduces instructional minutes (the administration estimated roughly 14 hours across the year) and could eat into snow‑day cushion, requiring makeup days in an extreme weather year. Supporters argued teacher planning time improves instruction and pointed to teacher feedback and local examples (high-school tardies reduced by ~75% after targeted interventions) as evidence the time will benefit students.
The motion to approve the proposed calendar passed in a roll-call vote called by the chair.
