Motion to adopt TCI social studies curriculum dies after board members raise bias concerns
Summary

The board considered adopting the TCI Social Studies curriculum for grades 9–12 but the motion failed for lack of a second. Mrs. Allison moved to accept TCI for grades 9–12; no board member seconded the motion. During discussion, Mrs. Harrington said she appreciated the curriculum’s objectives but, after her review, felt "parts of the material appeared biased and applied a modern perspective to events that occurred more than 200 years ago." Staff told the board they would review additional curriculum options and seek teacher input.
Staff emphasized that curricula can be taught in different ways and asked the board which alternatives they would like considered; Mr. Anderson suggested a more traditional program such as McGraw‑Hill. The board did not adopt the TCI curriculum and asked staff to bring additional options for future consideration.
