Katie Freeman, a City Council member, opened the commission’s reports by announcing that the city budget had passed and asking the Arts Commission whether it wanted to support art mediums beyond theatre.
Freeman urged the commission to compile an inventory of Coralville’s existing public art and to promote it on the city website. “It would be great to put together an inventory of Coralville’s existing public art and promote it on the website,” Freeman said, noting installations on the River Walk as well as sculptures in the library, artwork at City Hall and pieces at local schools.
Commissioners discussed the need not only for greater awareness but also for a dedicated maintenance budget. Freeman suggested that cataloging existing work might be a good project for a graduate student or intern who could also research preservation and maintenance approaches. The commission did not adopt a specific funding plan at the meeting but identified the inventory and maintenance as priority follow-up tasks.
