Council honors veterans, designates borough ‘veteran-friendly’

Council President Bill Boyce introduced a veterans’ recognition presentation and invited Fred Puglisi and a veteran presenter forward to unveil a plaque formalizing Old Tappan’s designation as a veteran-friendly municipality.
“Ultapan is hereby recognized as a veteran from the municipality, the state of New Jersey for the commitment to veterans,” the presenter said while describing the plaque and its imagery, which includes a Chinook helicopter and a steel element commemorating 9/11. Boyce said the town will add veteran-only parking, support veteran hiring efforts and expand the veterans memorial at Oaks Park to include conflicts since the Korean War. The council took no formal vote on the plaque during the presentation but posed for photos and thanked volunteers for leading the campaign.
Boyce described ongoing committee support for veterans initiatives and outlined two Eagle Scout projects tied to the memorial expansion, including a planned Purple Heart memorial. The presentation also noted coordination with the historic committee on design elements and with town staff to move materials procurement forward this year.
