Tracy Reese, deputy director of the Utah Office of Energy Development, opened the Carbon County workshop by describing a statewide nuclear education and outreach campaign connected to Governor Cox’s Operation Gigawatt, announced in February 2024. Reese said the office plans to visit all 29 counties, gather community questions about safety, milling and mining, and post recorded videos and frequently asked questions online so residents can review presentations afterward.
"We wanted to go to every community and find out what are the questions that your community members have, and how can we best bring subject matter experts in and engage them so that they have access to the information they need," Reese said. She urged residents to attend the third event in Carbon County’s three-part series and said the office will provide toolkits to help communities evaluate proposals if developers approach them.
Reese framed the outreach as part of broader grid planning: with retiring baseload resources and rising demand from population growth and electrification, the state is seeking additional reliable generation options. The workshop format included industry presenters and a moderated question-and-answer session; Reese said videos and materials from the events will be posted at energy.utah.gov for later review.
