Kelly Sheridan was elected president of the Sweetwater Independent School District Board of Trustees during the board's May 18 reorganizational vote after newly sworn trustees took the oath of office.
Outgoing Board President Mark Garcia opened nominations. Tasha Soto nominated Kelly Sheridan and Domingo Castillo nominated Dennis Cumbie; a show‑of‑hands vote elected Sheridan by 3–2. Members voting for Sheridan were Tasha Soto, Brenda Valdez and Matthew McKay; Domingo Castillo and Dennis Cumbie voted for Cumbie. The transcript records that Sheridan abstained from voting.
After Sheridan assumed the chair, the board moved to fill remaining officer roles. Brenda Valdez was nominated for vice president and, following a motion to close nominations, accepted the role. Tasha Soto was nominated to remain as board secretary. The reorganizational steps occurred during the same agenda item after the oath of office for new trustees.
