Zillah council appoints Lodging Tax Advisory Council members to advise on tourism funds

The City of Zillah Council voted Oct. 7 to confirm five appointments to the Lodging Tax Advisory Council and adopted Resolution No. 2024‑43.
Councilmember Janice Gonzales moved to concur with the mayor's recommendations; Councilmember Brian Williams seconded and the motion passed unanimously. Appointees named in the record were Councilmember Beth Hustead; Pam Lakman of Zillah Lakes Inn; Tom Denlea of Best Western Plus Vintage Valley Inn; Armando Valadez, co‑founder of Zillah Sports; and John Cooper, president and CEO of Yakima Valley Tourism.
At the study session earlier the council reviewed Ordinance No. 1561, which created the LTAC, and staff stressed the committee must operate consistent with state law. Community Development Director Ardele Steele summarized that the committee’s membership “is consistent with State law and Ordinance No. 1561 and the Mayor recommended appointments to fill all vacancies,” and reminded the council that, per RCW, LTAC meetings are subject to the public‑records act and the open public meetings act.
The appointments give the LTAC a full membership to begin making funding recommendations for lodging‑tax dollars that must be spent on tourism‑related activities eligible under state law. The council did not record any dissents or amendments to the appointments in the minutes.
