Board approves SCTC lease amendment to reactivate tower for 5G; district to receive four devices

The Santiam Canyon School Board voted 5-0 on April 13 to approve an amendment requested by SCTC to use a tower behind the district office property. Superintendent Krista Nieraeth described the request as a reactivation of an existing tower to support a possible 5G network, and said the district would receive four devices for staff use so employees could carry district phones instead of personal cell phones.
Ms. Nieraeth noted questions about health concerns and said information would be provided to address them; she also said the tower would be disguised to fit into the surrounding environment. "The hope is to have a 5g network and they are looking at Verizon," she told the board. Mrs. Lynda Harrington moved to approve the April 3, 2026 amendment to the Wireless Site Agreement; Mrs. Melissa Allison seconded. The motion passed 5-0.
